Boxing trainer Angelo Dundee dies

Boxing trainer Angelo Dundee and Muhammad AliLegendary boxing trainer Angelo Dundee died on Wednesday 2nd February 2012. Dundee passed away in Florida at the age of 90 years old. Dundee was the man responsible for motivating boxing champs such as Muhammad Ali and many others.

Dundee was inducted in the International Boxing Hall Of Fame in 1992. Dundee was hired to be the trainer of Ali and cornerman in 1960 back when Ali went by the name of Cassius Clay. Dundee was with Ali through, George Foreman, Smokin Joe Frazier and Ali’s name change all the way to the end of his career.

During Ali’s 1980 loss to Larry Holmes, after seeing Ali get battered round after round Dundee stopped the fight after the 10th round. Dundee fought of objections from Ali and others saying that the fight should be stopped. Dundee is also remembered for inspiring Sugar Ray Leonard during his 1981 battle with Tommy Hearn’s.

Just before the 13th round Dundee whispered in Leonard’s ear in a fatherly tone and said, “You’re blowing it now son! You’re blowing it.” Leonard had a major comeback after that and in the 14th round knocked out Hearn to win another welterweight championship.
