Two days after Josh Powell and his 2 sons died in a fire at their home, officials are now saying that Josh Powell planned the murder-suicide and attacked his sons before setting their house on fire. According to the medical examiner, 7 year old Charlie and 5 year old Braden Powell suffered chop injuries to their heads and necks. Investigators also reportedly found a hatchet that is believed to have been used on the boys.

According to the sheriff, the boys father, Josh Powell then set the house on fire. Ed Troyer of the Pierce County Sheriff Department said they found a hatchet right their with the bodies of the boys. Troyer also said that they found two 5 gallon cans of gas, one with the bodies and the other spread throughout the house.

According to police, before Powell executed the murder-suicide he donated his sons toys to charity and left instructions about his personal stuff in emails. Troyer said that Powell wanted everyone to know that he was the one who did this. Powell was under suspicion for the disappearance of his wife Susan Cox Powell from their home in December 2009.

Powell recently lost curstody battle of his sons to Susan’s parents. Chuck Cox, Susan’s dad said that the children were having a good time playing home Sunday before their court order visit with their dad and did not want to go. However, Chuck’s wife, Judy Cox who talked the boys into going and now regrets it.

An attorney for the Cox family said that the boys had recently talked about seeing their mom in the trunk of the car the night she vanished. Powell was likely to be arrested in the coming months, the lawyer also said.
