Laugh Staff Responds to Huffington Post’s Article on Tips Before Getting Married

“I am lucky to be marrying my best friend” is a common sentiment given at weddings. However, in a recent article by Marcus Geduld in the Huffington Post, there are several things young couples need to think about before saying “I do.” Laugh Staff, the company that writes and edits best man speeches, offers some comments on the article.

Geduld stated that finances, family, children, religion, addictions, etc., can be detrimental to marriages and these issues need to be discussed before the big day. He warns that these issues will not go away on their own.

“It would be terrible to find out that the groom had some kind of weird addiction or obsession during a toast or the best man speech,” said Laugh Staff consultant, Kali Fencl. “It might be said in jest, but learning something like that so late in the game could spark some controversy. I mean, serious things, like drug and alcohol abuse. If he was addicted to something like gaming or LARPing that’s different and I would almost guarantee that’s how the couple met.”

The article also details that couples should spend time communicating everything so no one is blindsided later in the marriage. It’s also a good idea for couples to spend time working on a month-long project to see how working together feels. The final question Geduld left readers with is if both partners are committed to marriage for life.

“I think both people need to be on the same page when it comes to the belief of marriage,” said Fencl. “No one ends a best man speech by saying ‘may you have a happy few years together.’ You both need to think, we’re in this for the long haul or we’re both just going to see how this works.”

The alternative might be being alone, but couples need to go into marriage knowing exactly what they’re getting into. Laugh Staff wants every toast to include the sentence, “A long and happy marriage to you both!” and mean it.
