BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS – Former Prime Minister of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, the Right Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas said Tuesday he has no confidence that the Team Unity Government of Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris would stand up for the sovereign rights of the people of the twin-island Federation.
He was at the time responding to several concerns expressed by callers to his weekly “Ask the Leader” on Kyss 102.5 FM, on US President Donald Trump’s campaign promise to deport criminals from the United States back to their countries of birth.
“There is a process to be followed in which the Receiving Country – in this case St. Kitts and Nevis – would have to give permission for that person who is being uprooted from the United States of America to be sent back here to St. Kitts and Nevis. When I was Prime Minister, that was the policy that was instituted, unless our country agree to receive the person, after verification that the person is a Kittitian or a Nevisian, then the exercise would be futile,” Dr. Douglas told listeners.
He pointed out that in the past there were people who were being deported tried to come to St. Kitts and Nevis claiming they were born in the Federation, but on verification their claims were found to be false.
“But because of the behaviour of Donald Trump today, and as one caller said he is doing what exactly he said he would do during the campaign, and is not being critical like some of our leaders. He said he is doing this and he is doing that and because that there is fear that he would by Executive Order to simply deport people whether or not the Receiving Country likes it, that is the concern that we have.
And because this Team Unity Government in order to get into office has said a lot of negatives things about our country, the (US) President can say to hell with those in St. Kitts and Nevis, as they down there have said publicly to the world that criminals are being given the right to travel, they just simply send them to St. Kitts and Nevis, whether or not the government wishes to receive them.”
Dr. Douglas the Team Unity Government has displayed a lack of integrity in many cases on these matters.
“That is why as Sylvene Henry has been saying there is fear that criminal activity would increase and people just sent to St. Kitts and Nevis without Donald Trump waiting for the Team Unity Government to say that it will receive them. That is the kind of crazy situation that we can find ourselves in because the Team Unity Government when it was in opposition never practised integrity,” he stated.
He stressed that he Team Unity Government basically said anything it wanted to say to get into office and its own words will eventually come back to haunt the people of St. Kitts and Nevis.
“I believe that the process should be pursued, but I have very little confidence that it will be pursued. I have very little confidence in this government to speak bluntly and frankly to this new US Administration to say something is wrong, I won’t accept it because there is no integrity that is being practiced so far by this team unity government and to a large extent there is a concern. There is a grave concern that those who have criticized the Labour Party Administration, are going to be made to look ridiculous.
