BASSETERE, ST. KITTS – Nationals of the seven Muslim-majority countries banned from entering the United States for at least the next 90 days and who hold nationality of St. Kitts and Nevis will be affected by the Executive Order of United States President, Donald Trump.
“That is going to affect those who hold dual nationality through our Citizenship by Investment Programme,” said Leader of the Opposition, the Right Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas on Tuesday.
He said the Trump Executive Order will also affect nationals of St. Kitts and Nevis who are living in the United States illegally as well as those who hold Greencards.
Dr. Douglas blasted the current Team Unity Administration of Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris for leading an onslaught of the programme while its members were sitting on the opposition benches in the National Assembly.
He said the Team Unity Government has several options in dealing with the issues.
“This is a critical matter that our people should begin to think about,” said Dr. Douglas, who agreed with a caller that the Team Unity Government must be held partly responsible for the negative comments it manufacture and published while in opposition.
“The false and negative comments that emanated from St. Kitts and Nevis through the (Team Unity-owned and controlled) Times Caribbean and St. Kitts and Nevis Times), while Team Unity was in opposition, that St. Kitts and Nevis were bringing into our country terrorists and criminals holding our passports through the Citizenship by Investment Programme, then what do you expect new president Donald Trump to do with these persons coming into his own country? It was a lie but as a result of all of the rhetoric that emanated from this country itself, without any concern as to how this can affect our own Citizenship by Investment Programme, simply because they want to get into political office and government,” said Dr. Douglas, who asked: “How can the Team Unity Government respond to what president Donald Trump is doing to persons who are citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis and who have visas in their passports to travel from their country of birth to St. Kitts and Nevis ?”
Dr. Douglas, who served as prime minister from July 1995 to February 2015, said the Team Unity Government is going to be numb in its response to the Trump Executive Order.
“I don’t believe the Team Unity Government was ever of the thinking then that today would have come, but that is what they while in opposition were calling for that these legitimate persons must not come to St. Kitts and Nevis to invest and become citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis by labelling them terrorists. Simply because they were born in Iran does not mean they are terrorists. That does not mean they are criminals,” Dr. Douglas said.
“It (the Muslim ban) is a very serious matter that the Team Unity Government now has to sit down and tackle,” said Dr. Douglas.
