Lamar Odom requests for trade leads him to the Dallas Mavericks
Lamar Odom was reportedly so hurt by the LA Lakers including him in a three-way deal for Chris Paul of the Hornets that the NBA league stopped that he requested to be traded on Friday according to a source. Late on Saturday 10th December 2011 Odom’s request was granted when he was traded to the Dallas Mavericks for an $8.9 million exception as well as Dallas’s 2012 first round pick. The LA Lakers, New Orleans Hornets and Houston Rockets agreed on a deal on Thursday that would have sent Odom to the Hornets and Pau Gasol to the Rockets.
However the trade was stopped by the NBA League on Friday because according to David Stern it would have been unfair for the Hornets and upset the competitive balance. After the canceled deal Odom skipped the first day of training camp on Friday with the LA Lakers. Odom reportedly had a face to face meeting with Mitch Kupchak, general manager and asked to be traded.
Although Kupchak reportedly asked Odom to reconsider his position and rethink the decision Odom remained firm. Odom later told the Los Angeles Times on Thursday that you don’t want to go any place where you’re not wanted. On Sunday, Dallas Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle spoke as if the deal was complete.
Carlisle said that having Dirk Nowitzki, Shawn Marion and now Lamar Odom they may have the best trio in the league right now. Carlisle also said that they had great respect for Odom as a player and as a person and that he felt that Odom would add different dimensions for them including championship experience. Odom has spent 7 of his 12 seasons with the NBA in LA with the LA Lakers and he spent 4 with the Clippers.
Gasol practiced with the LA Lakers on Saturday and said that he wished to stay with the team but that he was just going to be as professional as he could be and do his job.
