Samsung and Apple have long been bitter rivals, but this comes as no surprise given the fact that they are competing for dominance in an incredibly lucrative market. The rivalry is between the companies is reflected in their products, the iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S3.
These two smartphones are probably the most regularly compared and generally the top two choices for most people when choosing a new smartphone. Because of this, numerous reviews and videos have been made comparing the two devices. An insurance firm in the United States called SquareTrade has carried out tests to see which of two handsets is most durable on a new YouTube video. Three different tests are carried out with the phones, and the results are as follows.
The first one is a drop test. Just like in another recent drop test between the two which was carried out by Android Authority, the iPhone 5 comes out on top. It sustains nothing more than a couple of barely noticeable scratches, however the Samsung Galaxy S3 ends up with significant damage to its plastic casing and even a smashed screen which has become unusable.
After the drop test, the handsets are attached to a camera facing the screen. A music video is played on the screen of each phone and the camera and phone are thrown into a swimming pool. The screen of the Samsung Galaxy S3 stops working almost immediately. Remarkably though, when the iPhone 5 is retrieved from the bottom of the swimming pool, the music video is still playing on the screen along with the accompanying audio, and despite being dropped into a swimming pool, there appears to be no damage sustained by the iPhone after this test. Finally, both phones are laid on a table and a selection of household items are dropped onto the phones. The items increase in weight each time. The start with, items like a TV remote control are used, but no damage was sustained to either phone until a 20 ounce beer bottle is used. Whilst it does not damage the iPhone 5, it smashes the screen of the Samsung Galaxy S3, despite the fact that it incorporates the latest version of Corning Gorilla Glass.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 has many strings to its bow, but little further proof is needed that the iPhone 5 is the more durable of the two phones. This comes as no surprise given the fact that the iPhone 5 has a unibody design and aluminium construction, whereas the Galaxy S3 has plastic panels and a separate battery cover.
