Apple rumoured to be unveiling iPad mini on the 23rd of October – Surface tablet to be released on the same week

Apple is now rumoured to be unveiling the hotly-anticipated iPad mini on the 23rd of October. Is it a coincidence that Microsoft Surface tablet will be going on sale just a few days after?

AllThingsD’s sources claim that the 23rd of October will be the day Apple finally launches the rumoured iPad mini. The Redmond firm plans to make the Surface tablet running Windows 8 go on sale just a few days after the 23rd.

We’ve heard rumours of the iPad mini ever since Apple released the first iPad, but we are yet to see it land in shops. Now, leaked components seem to give credence to the existence of a smaller iPad. Leaked components of the smaller version of the new iPad sporting features such as a Lightning connector just like the iPhone 5.

The question is, will Apple unveil the rumoured smaller iPad? Of course, there’s no way to tell if the rumours are true or not. However, it makes perfect sense for the Cupertino firm to do so. Smaller Android tablets such as the Google Nexus 7 and the Amazon Kindle Fire HD have been eating away on tablet market shares. So Apple may want to get back the lost market shares it lost to these rival tablets.

Another angle would be Apple feeling threatened by the new Surface tablet by Microsoft powered by Windows 8. Microsoft’s next generation software offers a host of new features that might just give iOS and Android a run for its money. So it would make sense for Apple to steal the limelight from Microsoft, the week it makes the Surface tablet go on sale.

Is Apple planning to unveil the rumoured iPad mini just a few days before Microsoft’s Surface tablet powered by Windows 8 goes on sale, or do you still think Apple will never launch a smaller iPad? Share your thoughts through a comment below.
