Microsoft unveiled its brand new mobile operating system at a press event in California on Monday evening. Windows Phone 8 is an exciting development in the smartphone market dominated by Android and iOS powered devices, as it offers a refreshing alternative.
A number of high profile manufacturers have created new smartphone models to showcase the new software, including Samsung, Nokia and HTC.
The Nokia Lumia 920 is the Finnish manufacturer’s high-end device, which will be launched alongside the Lumia 820 which is its mid range offering. HTC is also launching two phones with the software installed. The HTC 8X will be its high end phone, with the mid range handset called the HTC 8S.
The Nokia Lumia 920 and HTC 8X are generally viewed as two most impressive phones with Windows Phone 8 installed, and it appears that the two companies may have started something of a rivalry, as they are both vying for the flagship title. HTC took to its Facebook page yesterday and posted a picture of its high end HTC 8X model. Along with this is a caption reading “Don’t get weighed down! The HTC 8X is more than 20 pennies lighter than that “other” Windows Phone”. This is clearly taking a swipe to the Nokia Lumia 920, and the fact that the device is heavier than the HTC 8X. According to a post on the GSMArena blog, 20 American pennies (or 1¢ coins) weighs in at approximately 50 g. Given the fact that Nokia’s Lumia 920 is 55 g heavier than the HTC 8X, it confirms that HTC has taken a pop at the Finnish manufacturer’s high-end device.
We will leave it down to you to decide whether this is light hearted banter or a sign of a deeper underlying rivalry. Either way, we are unlikely to see the rivalry between these two companies reach the heights of that of Apple and Samsung, which have infamously been locked in a number of legal battles around the world as they compete to take the top spot in the lucrative global smartphone market.
Choosing between the HTC 8X and the Nokia Lumia 920 has no easy feat. For example, the Nokia Lumia 920 lacks the Beats Audio and has a lower pixel resolution than the HTC 8X, but the Taiwanese manufacturer’s offering does not have the same PureView camera or 4G connectivity of the Lumia 920.
