Apple has recently been targeted by Samsung in a couple of adverts including a YouTube video, mocking Apple fans and discrediting the iPhone 5 in an attempt to promote its Galaxy S3. It seems that Nokia has followed suit, and in a new YouTube video posted by Nokia Germany, the Finnish manufacturer has targeted the iPhone 5 and its users in an attempt to promote the Lumia 920.
The animated video shows a bleak, industrial environment where everything is grey. A melancholy piano track plays in the background as a line of dreary looking customers queue outside the shop in a robot like manner. On the outside of the shop there is an advert for a product called ‘phone #5′. This situation coupled with the poster is obviously a reference to the new Apple iPhone 5, and the lines of customers who queued up to be among the first to get their hands on it. The customers are then shown handing over handfuls of bank notes in exchange for the phone and then walking off in a similar manner as to when they queued. One customer however asks for the phone in a different colour, with an imagination bubble appearing over his head with a can of yellow paint being poured onto a black phone to demonstrate it. The shop assistant looks angry, and a siren sounds as though rest of the customers gasp in disbelief.
After this though, the scene changes dramatically. The music switches to an upbeat song, and the world comes alive with colour in a stark contrast to previous mis-en-scene.
This ad is clearly aimed at showing a contrast between the usual black colour schemes of smartphones, and highlighting the refreshing yellow and red colour schemes of the Lumia 920. By targeting the iPhone 5, Nokia is likely to get maximum exposure for the advert compared to choosing a less popular model.
The Nokia Lumia 920 his set to hit the UK next month, and will be among the first smartphones to run the latest Windows Phone operating system.
