Barclaycard and Orange have teamed up with the Samsung Galaxy SIII to develop the QuickTap function. This feature will allow Samsung Galaxy S3 owners to pay for goods and services in QuickTap areas. A QuickTap payment is a contactless payment system that allows you to complete a transaction using your smartphone as a credit card. For payments more than £15 you need to enter a PIN number, but for smaller transactions you simply agree for the money to come out of your account and you’re billed accordingly.
The QuickTap payment system has been developed with Barclays so the payment processors can accept the payments quicker and easier. It means that in the future less staff will be needed and less queues will be seen. It’s a similar progression of retail as the self-service checkouts in supermarkets that allow people to be in control of scanning, paying and completing the transaction themselves. As time goes by there will be more and more QuickTap shops in the UK that will let the public pay for items so much more easily, and it means that you don’t have to carry around cash with you.
QuickTap is currently available for other phones but as the Samsung Galaxy SIII is one of this years’ most influential smartphones we feel it was worth explaining. The Wave 578 and the Tocco also have QuickTap and it will be rolled out to other phones over the course of the next year, but Barclays is keen to say that QuickTap will not be available to everyone! The bank account must be a Barclays one and the carrier must be Orange, which at present has just been granted 4G technology first with T-Mobile before the other carriers, so that’s no bad thing if you already have this configuration. You also need to have bought your phone from September 5th and have a Visa or Mastercard too.
As Mobile Phone Checker includes Orange as one of the most cost-effective networks, as well as a myriad of Samsung Galaxy SIII deals, it’s highly probable that people will start searching for a new phone soon and look for the cheapest prices. To encourage customers more Barclays is adding £50 of credit to the QuickTap account for those that sign up and start using the technology from the 5th September to 5thOctober. At the moment, there are 100,000 retailers in the UK that feature the QuickTap functionality such as EAT, Pret a Manger, Co-op Food, M&S and McDonalds.
There is a slight worry that some retailers aren’t aware of the technology and people will be flailing their smartphones around while being asked for payment, but it’s certainly a step-up in the UK’s technological advances.

With QuickTap being available, we have an inkling that more people will be snapping up the Galaxy S3.
